Stylishly Cozy Collection for Fall/Winter
It’s getting colder. Damp. Gloomy. My least favorite season for weather. But then, I turn my eye to the changing colors of the leaves, pumpkins on porches, fire pits and comfy sweaters. I love being bundled up against the chill. Layering on flannel and denim. It’s a stylishly cozy combination. Add a great scarf and pair of boots and I’m ready to go.
Although I am not a huge fan of winter, I love the feeling of snuggling in. Our wardrobes reflect the cooler temperatures and our home decor can too. The Spring/Summer Collection for the Make Lemonade Shop was much simpler to create. Easier. Spring and Summer is about fun, sun, bright colors, flowers, excitement. When I found the Inspiration Fabric for the Spring/Summer Collection, I was off and running. Adding stripes, chevrons, hand-painted suns and goldfish. Pulling it all together to make a cohesive line, after finding a focus, wasn’t difficult.
But I am not finding an Inspiration Fabric for the fall/winter Collection. I have combed all the fabric stores in the area, and nothing is clicking. The process is a bit more difficult this season. I’ve had to really sit back and think about what fall/winter means to me. The word that kept coming to mind was “Cozy”.
I love being warm and snuggled in when the weather outside is frightful. But when I’m home, and snuggled in, I’m not exactly dressed for the public eye. Layers of fleece and flannel. Fuzzy slippers, thick socks. Not exactly pretty. Definitely not stylishly cozy. More like frumpy cozy. LOL How’s that for a line of Pillowcases? Frumpy Cozy? I bet you are queuing up to purchase those designs!
I ventured out into the fashion world to find inspiration. I love to wear a blanket scarf in the cooler temps. They keep my neck warm and toasty, I can pull the scarf up over my head for protection from the cold whistling wind. When we are out and about I also use these scarves as a blanket for my legs, especially in the car. So cozy and versatile. Flannel and sweaters are also on my radar, stylishly cozy. Boots and leather, too. Blue jeans. All snuggly. Cozy. But stylish too.
Looking to the fashion world helped me see “cozy” in a new light. It doesn’t have to mean old, comfy sweats that shouldn’t be seen in public. Unless of course you want to be seen in the “People of Walmart” series. LOL Cozy can be stylish, in your wardrobe or home decor.
When I think of the summer home I think bright, fun and eye-catching are welcoming. They give off a light, airy feeling. Perfect for a day spent out under the sun on the patio. Sipping a libation, lounging in the hammock or playing yard games with friends.
Winter is a totally different animal. Color is still welcoming, but texture plays a huge part in a cozy home. Total mind shift when creating a collection. A Collection that will work for almost any decor. Stylishly Cozy became the inspiration.
Choosing Stylishly Cozy Colors
There are colors that I associate with a cozy home, but I also wanted to make sure that I was on the right track for current color trends. The success of the collection depends on whether the buyer can see the Make Lemonade Shop pillowcases fitting into their home decor. Although I may feel an affinity for a certain fabric, if it doesn’t translate into the mainstream market then I’m going to have a Collection that looks great but doesn’t sell.
I decided to check out some of my favorite fashion bloggers to see what was being forecast for fall/winter fashion. From there I stumbled upon the Pantone Fashion Report for Fall 2016. Loved reading this report, Pantone is predicting this feeling behind their choices:
“The desire for tranquility, strength, and optimism have inspired a Fall 2016 color palette that is led by the Blue family.
Along with anchoring earth tones, exuberant pops of vibrant colors also appear throughout the collections. Transcending gender, these unexpectedly vivacious colors in our Fall 2016 palette act as as playful but structured departures from your more typical fall shades.
Blue skies represent constancy as they are always above us. Grays give a feeling of stability, Red tones invite confidence and warmth, while the hot Pinkish Purples and Spicy Mustard Yellows suggest a touch of the exotic.”
Here are the colors Pantone has chosen to represent fashion and home decor for the season.
I’m kinda in love with this Collection of colors, the blues are always a favorite. They are pretty, calming, airy. And blue coordinates well with so many other colors. With the holidays ahead I also love the shades of red and green. The mustard and rust colors pull me into the kitchen, winter is a time for baking, filling our homes with the wonderful aroma of herbs and spices. Definitely cozy and warm.
Behr and Sherwin Williams has chosen paint colors for the year that echo the hues Pantone has chosen for fashion, creamy/winter whites, blacks/greys and earthy brown hues to balance out the home. Looking at these sites made me think about choosing new paint colors. For a minute. And it made my husband nervous! Luckily our home is painted in different shades of light grey, winter white, blues and a bit of taupe. So we fit right in with the advertised color trends.

Looking for Stylishly Cozy Fabrics
Now that I found the color trends for the year I wanted to look into textures and fabrics. Fabric.com is one of my favorite on-line stores. I’m a fabric geek. I admit it. I love texture. I have to touch it. I’m the girl that ‘weirds you out’ because I touch your jacket, or sweater. It’s an obsession for me, touching soft or interesting materials. If we plan to meet for coffee I urge you to wear something soft, intriguing and textural. I’m going to have to touch it. Maybe not immediately, but my hands are going to be uncontrollable until I do.
Watch me squirm!
Over the years I have made many purchases from Fabric.com. Silver Dupioni Silk for drapes in our Master Bedroom, the couch has been reupholstered in navy velvet. So stylishly cozy. We inherited my grandparents tufted barrel chairs and gave them a make-over with a woven chevron twill in winter white and dusty blue. And remember the Monkey Fabric used for our drapes? This fun print also came from Fabric.com. The Fabric.com site also has great sales and clearance fabrics, I check back regularly for great bargains on fantastic fabrics.
So when looking for fabric and inspiration, it was a no-brainer for me to look for inspiration on their site. Below are some of the options that I’m thinking about.
If you are looking for similar fabrics click on the swatch below, you will be taken to the Fabric.com site for ideas or options.
Burlap is a weakness of mine. Although we have a more modern home decor style, I love the rustic look of burlap. I think it’s a textural thing. I love the feel of the material. Especially paired up with a more glamorous fabric, such as a Damask or Velvet. Ticking is another one of my all time favorites. Burlap and ticking remind me of my childhood. The feeling of cozy comfort. You know that feeling that everything is right with the world? Love that!
I love Damask and I want it in the collection I’m not finding the pattern that I’m looking for. Do you ever have an abstract image in your mind, but you can’t quite find what you’re looking for? It’s there, the vision, in the back of my mind. Itching to get out. I’d like a winter white background for the damask, with a large design, perhaps a bit aged looking. In a medium blue, Holiday red, black and white, greys.
So what do you do when you can’t find what you want? You make it. I don’t want to ‘settle’ on just any fabric, it has to be just right. This week I’m going to pull it together, catch the vision and make it a reality.
Forming the Stylishly Cozy Collection
It’s a big job, creating the Collection, but tons of fun. Keep your eye out for updates this week. I’ll be posting photos on Facebook and Instagram as the Collection comes together. The image above are some of the fabrics that I’ve already purchased for the Stylishly Cozy Collection; flannel, burlap, damask, grey twill, dark navy denim, black faux leather and ticking. This week I’ll add the final fabrics and punches of color.
What’s your idea on fall/winter decor? Do you entirely switch out everything for each holiday? Or do you just switch out a few pieces to transition from light and fun to stylishly cozy?
The Collection wouldn’t be complete without some graphics, those will be coming soon too. Fun new fonts, hand-painted and set into the fabric, something for everyone. I’m looking at metallic graphics; gold and silver. Something to use in your own home decor or Holiday Gift Giving.
There’s so much more thought, creativity and emotion in creating the Collection. Although I didn’t find an Inspiration Fabric to base the entire collection around, I think that “Stylishly Cozy” fits the season.
