What’s Making Me Happy in January…
It’s a New Year! Yippee! Although I am really excited by the prospect of wiping the slate clean, starting new, I’m having a bit of an issue getting on with it! December was BUSY! Good busy, excitingly busy. But now that I’m not putting in 20 hour work days I’m having trouble figuring out what to do with myself. LOL Perhaps I’ve been bit by the “Grass is Greener” bug. I’ve found that when I focus on what I’m grateful for that things seem to fall back into place, get sorted and work themselves out. So here’s what’s making me happy in January…
Television is making me happy…
I rarely watch TV. perhaps I should expand on that. I rarely watch TV while I’m upright. Saving my television watching for when I’m in bed. The house is quiet, Bruce and Georgia fall asleep before I do, so this is my time to zone out and relax.
There are quite a few shows that I love and look forward to catching up on once I get under the covers. I like a great story line and strong characters and am mostly drawn to drama and suspense series.

Here are my top contenders for night time binging. Some are current shows, others I catch through the Goobang Doo streaming Hulu or Netflix. Since cutting the cord with Cable TV we not only save money, but I can watch what I want whenever I want. So I do! (Streaming through Hulu and Netflix costs us about $20 a month, huge savings for us!)
Here’s my happiness lineup…
Madam Secretary-Drama. Sundays 9/8c on ABC
Love Tea Leoni. Always have. Her character in this series is so smart, savvy, well dressed and relatable. So cool to see a woman in a role of power. She plays Secretary of State-not abusing her position or looking for personal gain-but raising a family, eating a quick bite over her kitchen sink, respecting her husband and saving the world. All in one episode! (And I love her fashion style too!) And Bebe Neuwirth is on this show too, you remember her from Cheers and Frazier.)
Suits-Legal Drama. Wednesday 9/8c on USA
I’m currently watching Season 4 of the series and love it. I can’t believe that I have not been watching this show since the beginning! Where the heck was I? Love a good legal drama, working out the issues, bending the law-but not breaking it. And this show is so full of beautiful characters. I can’t wait to see what they get up to next!
Have you laid eyes on Gabriel Macht, who plays Harvey Specter? Where has this man been? He has never crossed my radar before. Lawd is he a fine looking, fast thinking lawyer. The one we would all want in our corner. Seriously, this GIF is making me happy. Look at those two!
Donna, Harvey’s assistant, (Sarah Rafferty) is not only gorgeous but clever, funny and smart. Just waiting for these 2 characters to figure out they belong together. The tension is killing me! ARG! Check it out. (Oh, and the clothing these characters wear…so fine. Especially the female characters; Rachel, Donna and Jessica. This show is similar to The Good Wife, which I truly loved. Come back Alicia! Please.)
Bull-Drama. Tuesday 9/8c on CBS
This series began airing in 2016, the main character, Jason Bull, is played by Michael Wetherly. (How you know Michael Wetherly-he played Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo on NCIS for 13 seasons. Loved him on that show too!)
“Brilliant, brash and charming, Dr. Bull is the ultimate puppet master as he combines psychology, human intuition and high tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses and the accused tick. Bull employs an enviable team of experts at Trial Analysis Corporation to shape successful narratives down to the very last detail.”
Yes, another law centered drama, but I love the psychology and technology used in the series. So cool to see behind the scenes, the insight into how we all think. So cool! (Reminds me a bit of Perception-love shows that get into how the brain works and make it entertaining at the same time.)
Elementary-Drama. Sunday 10/9c on CBS
Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as a modern day Sherlock Holmes, love this show, the pair are quick witted, smart and tech savvy. Love the original story lines each week. I hear that it might be getting the axe this year. ARG! Why do I happen to love shows that get cancelled!
I also love the theme of redemption in this series. Sherlock is a recovering addict and Holmes used to be a Surgeon and a Recovery Coach. Each has built upon their difficult past to build a great present and future. So cool.
Code Black-Medical Drama. Wednesday 10/9 c on CBS
“Code Black is a heart-pounding medical drama that takes place in the busiest, most notorious ER in the nation, where the staggering influx of patients can outweigh the limited resources available to the extraordinary doctors and nurses whose job is to treat them all—creating a condition known as Code Black.”
I told you I love dramas! This one is a medical drama jam packed with great characters and actors. Love them all but especially; Marcia Gay Hardin, Boris Kodjoe (so fine!) and Rob Lowe (this man has aged very well. LOL And he’s a bit of a cowboy on the show, love that!).
The Bachelor-Reality TV. Monday 8/7c on ABC
This has got to be the biggest Drama of all time! LOL I have been watching the show since the first season, so I have a bit of an attachment to the series. It’s not as much as a “love story” as it used to be, doggone reality TV lost the “reality”, but it’s still fun for me to watch. Making me happy that I’m not young and in the dating scene!
Sometimes I love checking out the recap sites more than I enjoy the show! And the Tweets! Don’t get me started, but they are hilarious. Log into Twitter during the show and search #thebachelor so much fun! Even more fun? Check out these sites for their amazing Bachelor Recaps:

My husband’s side of the closet is making me happy…
It is so cold! Freezing, in fact we’re in the midst of a rain/snow/ice storm, even school was cancelled today. We saw below freezing temps before winter actually started. I’ve been raiding Bruce’s side of the closet to find sweatshirts and insulated flannels to layer over my clothes. Today I am wearing a tank, long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt and Bruce’s insulated flannel. I can’t seem to get warm!
I’ve also been wearing leggings under my jeans or sweats. Even to bed.
Talking about leggings, I am in love with Buskins leggings. They are so soft and warm, feel great against my skin, and the patterns are so fun! They are making me happy and toasty.
I wish I would have grabbed this pattern, my friend Dawn did, they are so fun! She paired an over-sized black pullover and short black boots with these patterned leggings, looking stylish, relaxed and warm!
These leggings are similar to the “other” leggings, but they fit into my budget! Check them out and stay warm!
Seed Catalogs in the mailbox
Yeah! It might be winter outside my door, but this came in the mail this week! My Botanical Interests Seed Catalog! Filled with organic and heirloom goodies, love the quality and selections. So stoked.
I love planning the garden, I can look through the catalog a bajillion times and never tire of it! Dreaming of fresh veggies is making me happy.
This year I want to get my order in early, last year’s garden didn’t get planted til June. This year I’m going to be ready!
As I was glancing through, on page 19, I was stopped in my tracks! Last year I took a picture of our Listada de Gandia Eggplant and entered it into the monthly photo contest at Botanical Interests. As usual, I was late to the game, entering only 1 day before the contest ended. So I didn’t win. Huge Bummer!
But look…they used my photo in the catalog! How freakin’ cool is that? Eggplant for everyone!!!! Yippee.
Georgia’s Christmas gift to her friends…
As most of you know, Georgia is taking the Culinary courses through her high school and looking to further her culinary studies in college. This year in lieu of giving each of her friends a Christmas gift she invited them all over for dinner. She set a gorgeous table, started the party in the living room with appetizers, moved to the table for salad and dinner.
She made her own compound basil butter and rosemary dinner rolls, Caesar salad with homemade Caesar dressing. Followed the starters up with steak-cooked to order and topped with garlic steak butter. Her sides were asparagus with Parmesan and loaded spinach, cheddar mashed potatoes.
Then dessert, a chocolate Andes Mint cake.
We are all so proud of her! She took the time to hunt up all the recipes, do the grocery shopping and bought everything with her own money. Not only did she learn a lot, they had a ton of fun. All the kids want her to cook for them regularly! LOL So do we!
Shortbread Chocolate Cheesecakes are making me happy!
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to make for a dessert for New Year’s Eve, I only knew that I wanted it to be gluten free so I could have some too! That cake Georgia made for her Christmas dinner looked so good, but I couldn’t partake!
When I was grocery shopping I happened to spy some Bob’s Red Mill GF Shortbread Cookie Mix, I love shortbread! They were my favorite Girl Scout Cookies, I could eat these everyday! (And did when I was younger.)
I popped over to my friend Erin’s site, Suburban Simplicity, to check out her recipe for filled cookie cups. I used the Shortbread Mix for the cups and made a few slight changes to turn the filling into chocolate cheesecake!
To make the filling I used all the ingredients in Erin’s recipe, adding 1/4 cup cocoa powder and 1/8 cup milk. I cannot even tell you how good these were! We don’t have a mini muffin baking pan, so I used a regular muffin pan, letting the shortbread bake for 3-4 minutes longer, than instructed, to cook them through.
Click on the image for this great deal! Enjoy 4 batches of these GF Shortbread cookies at a great price! I need to stock up.
Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Shortbread Cookie Mix, 21 Ounce (Pack of 4)
I don’t have the words to describe how good these were! Perhaps this will give you an idea- the recipe made 18 individual desserts. I packed 2 to take to Levi, Georgia and her friends each had one (total eaten-5), our guests each had 2 (total gone-11), I think that I may have consumed 7 of the remaining 9 all by myself!
Not all in the same night, but they were calling my name for breakfast and lunch! I couldn’t resist! I’ll be making them again soon.
Just to let you know, they paired perfectly with a Chocolate Martini! Happy New Year!
Santa brought me Copper!
Copper Mugs for Moscow Mules that is! Aren’t they pretty? I have to admit I did feel cooler while drinking my cocktail. Sarah Stone from Drinkware Essentials was right!
These pretty mugs make me smile! Obviously Santa was reading his wife’s blog! LOL Go Santa!
What’s making me happy this month…
It truly doesn’t take much to make me happy. All of these things, no matter how simple they may seem, bring me joy. The beginning of a New Year should be spent being joyful, and I’m making the most of it.
Yes, there’s still stuff that makes me mad, or sad, or upset. But for now, I choose to cuddle in, watch my shows, eat good food, embrace those I love, and roll in the joy of it.
So, what are you loving right now? Fill me in below, I can always use more happy!
