I Swoon when I find a great WordPress Theme…
Even if I love the one I have, I find that I can always fall in love with another. Developers are constantly coming up with new WordPress Theme after Theme. They’re so good at styling these themes, I can’t help but swoon. I’m that Girl, I love pretty things.
Lay’s Potato Chips state, “You can’t have just one”? Well I agree. One potato chip is pretty impossible. So is one pair of shoes and one WordPress Theme! A girl can’t ever have too many, right?
The first time I bought a theme I couldn’t see past the great styling job done by the Developer. I didn’t know enough to delve underneath the sleek look, to kick the tires or raise the hood. The look was enough for me. I was clueless about the things that I needed to have in a theme. Not only to make it run well, but to create a site that I loved.
I’m still addicted to looking at blog themes, but I try not to fall in love until I’ve checked them out a bit better. I’ve studied tons of themes to come up with a list of items, “Must Haves”, that I need a theme to possess in order to allow myself to totally fall for it. Now I make sure that my “Must Haves” are included in the WordPress Theme before I fall head over heels.
Do you know what you want when you look at a WordPress Theme?
Here are 10 of my WordPress Theme “Must Haves”.
(If you want a more in depth explanation of my “Must Haves” read about them here; 5 Blog Themes to Drool Over.)
4. Menu Bars
5. Blog Post area size
6. Ability to change color of theme
7. Great Header Area
8. Clean with lots of white space and must be unique
9. Example of threaded comments, block quote style, Headings, ordered lists and un-ordered lists
10. Ranking of Seller

Swoon for a WordPress Theme? Oh yeah!
ONE: Gather by 17th Avenue $49
Seller 100% recommendation on Creative Market
Gather is a gorgeous Foodie WordPress Theme and well worth the price. This package not only includes this delicious Child Theme, but also the Genesis Framework. Scoop it up now, before everyone else does! (LOL I know, food puns, but they never get old, do they?)
Scroll through this beauty and check it out. The images are not the only yummy-ness. This theme has a great recipe plugin, a portfolio page and a recipe index. Click through and check it out. I swoon!
And the subscription box right under the slider? Sleek! I need one. ASAP!
Since this theme is tailored toward Food Blogging there are a few things that may not be included in the demo from my “10 Must Haves”, but they’re not needed. My list has more to do with any other niche; Lifestyle, Fashion, Beauty, Parent Blog. Food Blogs have a few different requirements, such as the Recipe Index and Recipe Styling.
This is a responsive theme, it will look great across all screens, computer, tablet, or phone. And this is a Genesis Theme, built for SEO and speed.
Although only one menu bar is shown above, it has drop down capabilities, and there is a second menu if you choose to use it. The blog post area is over 700 pixels and the sidebar is nice sized too. Custom Social Icons are included, to follow and share. I like the streamlined look of the icons, they look great with the theme.
Although color change is one of my “must haves” I think that this theme is set up to showcase food images, color on the skin would take away from the photos. With images this scrumptious you wouldn’t want that!
There are a few things not shown, that I would like to see; Threaded Comments, Block Quote, Ordered and Un-ordered Lists and Headings. Although they aren’t used often on a food blog I’d still like to see a sampling of each.
Gather is a luscious theme, love the slider, subscription box, clean and streamlined look. This theme will serve up your dishes and make them the star of the show. It comes with everything you need to have a successful Food Blog. This is a Genesis WordPress Theme that comes with the Framework. Definitely having your cake and eating it too!

TWO: Kindred by Station Seven $49
Seller 96% Overall Recommendation on Creative Market
Station Seven develops some really great themes. I swoon. Not only are they gorgeous, they have incredible support. A website full of great articles about blogging and ways to help you create a great site, Station Seven.
Kindred by Station Seven is a Food and Lifestyle WordPress Theme. Best of both worlds! You can use the custom designed recipe function to detail your latest creation, or produce Lifestyle posts. Kindred has a great featured slider that you can choose to use, or not. The Grid Layout for blog posts and archives is another cool option.
Kindred is a Child Theme built on the Genesis Framework. It’s built well, SEO Optimized, and lightweight. If you’ve never used a Genesis WordPress Theme don’t be scared to try it. I’ve had one for the last year and a half, and I love it! There was a slight learning curve, but Station Seven and their website can help you through the transition.
I also love the Instagram Slider in the footer, the block quote, and the related posts at the end of the page. The Related Posts feature larger images enticing the reader to click through.
Kindred has it all, and more! Woocommerce compatible. If you have, or want, a store on your site you have that option with this WordPress Theme.
Kindred is a great multi-tasking theme; Food and Lifestyle Blog with the Woocommerce option. Station Seven has outstanding support for their customers, going the extra mile with the tutorials on their site. This is a responsive theme, it has a great block quote, and the post area is 740+ pixels. The sidebar is a bit smaller than I’d like at 200 pixels, but I could definitely work with that!

THREE: Matchstick: by Station Seven $49
Overall Recommendation 96% on Creative Market
Once again, this is a Station Seven WordPress Theme. Matchstick is a Child Theme and built on the Genesis Framework-which is included in the purchase. There are so many things that I love about this theme, but knowing that it was created by Station Seven and that it’s built on a streamlined Framework are two huge bonuses!
Click though and check out Matchstick, a Design and Fashion Blog, it can be used for any type of Lifestyle Site. I love the way the slider disappears as you scroll down the page. So cool to watch the plant disappear and reappear as I scroll back and forth! LOL I have too much fun when I’m Theme shopping! <Theme Geek>
Check out the Masonry Lay Out of the posts. It’s laid like Subway Tiles, how cool! Not too different, but just unique enough to strike a reader’s interest!
“Matchstick is a beautifully simple, masonry blog theme that’ll impress your readers and make your blogger friends jealous. Whether you run an established blog or just published your first post, Matchstick will get you that custom look, without the custom price tag.” Quoted from Station Seven
The image area is large; 765 pixels (for full width option), nice for displaying your decor or fashion photos. Scroll down past the post and look at those delicious Related Post Images. They are BIG and have presence. They definitely catch my eye, how about yours?
And how about the Instagram full length slider and the widgetized footer? This is a sleek, gorgeous WordPress Theme.
The block quote is cool and I’m loving the top menu with drop-down capabilities.
I love this WordPress Theme, it’s unique and loaded with extras. Matchstick is fast and sleek. I love the block quote, and would love to see the Ordered and Un-Ordered lists and Headings. But Station Seven’s Website and on-going assistance is a huge bonus! The post area with sidebar added is a bit smaller than I’d like – 672 pixels post area/sidebar 274 pixels. But the design is so well done I could learn to love it!

Seller 100% Recommended on Creative Market
Alexandra is such a clean WordPress Theme, it’s dreamy and pretty too. As I click through the options I can’t decide which option I like more; the Promo Boxes or the Slider. Both options create a gorgeous site, and I love having the option to choose.
This theme has post width of 740 pixels and a sidebar width of 300 pixels, I love a site with a good sized post area for images. The “Continue Reading” button and the Social Media Icons at the end of the truncated post are also eye-catching, just a bit different than the norm.
The developer included a “typography” tab, click through and see the Heading Tags and that gorgeous block quote. I’m swooning! The Ordered and Un-Ordered lists are also shown. You know I love to see all the details!
Scroll down a bit further to see the custom email subscription box and a full width Instagram slider! Aren’t they gorgeous?

FIVE: Jennifer by Luca Logos $27
Seller 90% Overall Recommendation on Creative Market
Jennifer is a gorgeous theme. Seriously. It’s a Genesis Child Theme and it’s well put together, SEO Optimized, easy to use and to customize. I should know, I’ve used this theme for the last 1.5 years! I can tell you, from experience, this WordPress Theme is easy to use and the developer, Luca, gives great instruction on how to install the theme and use all of it’s assets.
I love the clean look of the Jennifer Theme, so white and pretty. Making it easy to read and enjoy. The slider below the Header is optional, and it’s gorgeous. Luca has a talent for creating a well styled theme.
Jennifer also comes with a customizer, change the color of your site whenever you choose. Kind of like changing your outfit or lipstick. And if that’s not enough Luca has included an Extended Font Editor. I love this feature, it makes it so easy to alter the size of the font, or even the font family. No Coding! No getting into the Style Sheet. And for me this means I have less of a chance of breaking my site! LOL Trust me, I’ve done it, more than once!
The block quote is gorgeous, it stands out nicely. You know I love that! The comments are threaded and under the comment section there are several more bonuses. Another slider, email subscribe box and a full width Instagram slider. Isn’t is cool? Readers will want to hang out below the comments. Put the 3 widget areas in the footer to good use and dazzle visitors while they’re down there!
This is a Genesis WordPress Child Theme and the Framework comes in the package. Absolutely cool. This theme is SEO Optimized, well made and minimal. Use all the specialty areas to your advantage and create a site you love. From personal experience I can tell you that Luca is a joy to work with, in fact, although I love the Jennifer Theme I was feeling the need for a change. So I went shopping for another WordPress Theme and I purchased from Luca once again.I’m keeping the Jennifer Theme too, you never know when I’ll be up for another site face-lift!
And for $27 you can afford to have more than one WordPress Theme in your dashboard, right?
Score: 9.5 out of 10
