Creating Custom Pillowcases
I’ve had a blast this season with the new Stylishly Cozy Collection. While I waited to see how the new Collection was received I was simultaneously excited and anxious. Was I on track with decor fashion trends? Did my ideas translate well? Do they work with many types of decor? All these questions ran through my mind, plus 1000 more, as I worked to create a cohesive line. I am so pleased with how they turned out, I love the entire collection. At the same time, I’m also loving the ability to work with clients to create personalized Custom Pillowcases.

In late November I was contacted, via the Make Lemonade Shop, about creating 6 Custom Pillowcases. Gifts for the client’s nieces and nephews, each needed to be different and special, one of a kind Christmas Gifts. She was very specific; giving me their names, hobbies, likes, favorite colors and ages. With all this information I immediately began to put together ideas, stretching myself, to create something unique for each child.
My customer was a joy to work with. She thought that these gifts would make her the “Best Aunt Ever”, but I think she already ranks that status! She knows each of these children extremely well, that alone shows that she is an incredible Aunt!
I think I want her to adopt me. You too?
First off, let’s talk about the designs we created for the Boys. The client has 2 nephews; aged 8 and 2. We worked together to come up with some great ideas, personalized for each of the boys. Can’t you see pillows like these in your kids rooms? Custom Pillows are a great design element and can be used to turn any child’s room into one that’s personalized and fun.
Eight year old-Davin:
Davin loves dinosaurs and soccer, his favorite colors are red and blue. With that in mind, I added a T-Rex, to the front of the case, headbutting a soccer ball. Denim fabric forms the back of the pillowcase, adding an “all boy” feel and at the same time, incorporating one of Davin’s favorite colors-blue.
I worked to make the dinosaur age appropriate, adorable but not too youthful. How fun is this? I’m sure it’s every young boys dream-to play soccer with a T-Rex!
Calin-2 years old:
Calin loves trains and trucks and his favorite colors are green and orange.
The train was a no-brainer. I remember when Levi was this age, trains were one of his favorite things. The train track wound all around our living and dining rooms. Consequently, I can’t tell you how many times I stumbled over it, being my graceful self! LOL
Levi and his friends had matching engineer caps made from blue and white ticking, they would put them on and play for hours. I chose to use a ticking fabric for the backside of the pillowcase, engineer style.
Instead of dark poofs of smoke emanating from the engine, I chose to paint fun bubbles, floating away from the train. In Calin’s favorite colors, of course.
Custom Pillowcases for Girls
Next let’s chat about the girls; 4 nieces that are varied in age. From a new baby girl to 10 years old. Each girls has her own unique style and color preferences. It was so much fun to come up with personalized ideas for each of them.
Hannah aged 10:
Hannah is into vintage/retro punk. For a moment I was stumped, but was assured that she would love Peace signs, yellow submarines, the 70s look. Hannah is not a “girly” girl, but loves bright colors. The 70s were all about “Flower Power” and “Flower Children”, but flowers would not do for this girl. This fun “splat” shape was popular in the 70s and it caught my eye. Using it as a design element for the background of the pillowcase and then laying a Peace sign on top.
Of course, I couldn’t resist adding a Yellow Submarine to the back of Hannah’s pillow. I love the Beatles, and so does Hannah! It turned out so cool. (And it’s given me some ideas for a few Custom Pillowcases for our own sofa!)
I love the envelope style backside that each of the Make Lemonade Shop Pillowcases has. It makes it so easy to swap them out per season, or remove them for cleaning. A great way to mix and match your home decor. And the Yellow Submarine makes for a cool surprise on the backside of the Pillowcase. (If I say so myself!)
Lara-10 Years Old
Lara loves the colors coral, teal, yellow and aqua. What a great combination! My client suggested that Lara would love a case with the large flower added to the front of the pillow, paired with a more youthful fabric.
We decided on a custom dotted fabric for the front and stripes for the back. Finding this exact fabric at a retail store was impossible. So I created my own, using Lara’s favorite colors, with dots and stripes accented with a black outline.
I decided to create a felt rose flower with rounded edged petals for the front of the case, instead of the pointed tip Dahlia, that I normally use. The rose is full and pretty on the front of Lara’s pillow, creating a wonderful 3D effect.
Since Vada is so young we created a design that is girly, fun and eye-catching. We used multiple hues of pink, dots on the front and stripes on the back. Don’t you love the Owl trend in the nursery? This big eyed cutie fits the bill.
I wanted to create a bit of texture for Vada, achieving this by adding a pennant across the top of the pillowcase then added each letter of her name to each of the triangles. A coordinating fabric is sewn on the backside, making it even more fun.
I attached the pennant well, stitching it to a ribbon, then sewing it down multiple times. I created this element with Ava’s age in mind, this is a pillowcase that she can grasp or pull on without worry that the pieces will detach. The end product is adorable.
Ayla-4 years old
Ayla loves princesses and all things girly, so this pillowcase was perfect for her. Her Aunt sent me a picture of her, so I could tailor the pillowcase to her likeness.
Ayla is an adorable blondie with brown eyes and a creamy skin tone, so I carried over her specific coloring characteristics to the pillowcase.
I also wanted to add something girly to the top of the case and the pink ribbon flowers, on each side of her name, add color, interest and texture. The full tulle skirt, which is layered on top of a fuchsia satin, in order to bring depth to the design, is one of my favorite design elements.
Here’s a closeup of the Princesses face and hair, which is layered as well as shaded-creating depth. I kept Ayla’s image in mind as I painted, working towards creating a likeness of her. Above all, I wanted Ayla to be able to recognize the similarity.
The back of Ayla’s pillowcase is a stripe, multiple colors of pink with black pinstripes. And it pulls the adorable design together.
Likewise, you can pick and choose the colors for your pillowcases, from the Make Lemonade Shop, to coordinate and pull together an entire room.
Custom Pillowcases from the Make Lemonade Shop
I had a blast, working with my client, to create these Personalized Pillowcases for her nieces and nephews. They made me stretch and grow. I worked to pull in their likes as well as their hobbies. It was a challenge to create unique designs that each child would love, and I had so much fun with it.
My client loved the finished product and the “Best Aunt Ever” is excited to see the kids unwrap their gifts. I am too! LOL They are not having their Christmas Celebration until January 6th! ARG! The anticipation is killing me! Until then I am biting my nails, to the quick!
Not only did I have a great time creating the Custom Pillowcases, the client loved them too. In other words, a WIN for both of us.
But that wasn’t the end of it. When I delivered the pillows to my client’s office the entire staff came out to see what we were “oohing” and “ahing” over.
Later I’ll fill you in on what happened!
