Behind The Scenes-Make Lemonade Shop
As most of you know, about 45 days ago Bruce and I had to figure out a way to turn the lemons, that life has thrown at us, into lemonade. And we needed to make lots of lemonade, really quickly. So the Make Lemonade Shop was created. Today, is opening day, the Shop is set up and ready for business. Hooray! Not only is this a quick and quiet announcement, but I thought I’d give you a behind the scenes look at the Make Lemonade Shop.
Over the last 6 months we have been thrown some curve balls and unexpected events/expenditures. Otherwise known as, in our house, lemons. Both the kids were genetically tested and they were winners in the genetic lottery. Each of them need medication/supplements for the rest of their lives, so that their minds and bodies can run at the optimum level. Thankfully all of the issues, that we passed on to them, can be treated, but it’s expensive.
We wracked our brains, trying to figure out how to rob Peter to pay Paul, but Peter was broke. We’d already used up Peter’s stash paying for my diagnosis and treatment. I’ve always been artistic/crafty, but I hadn’t been in the business for quite some time. I’m a decorative artist, painting furniture with murals, large and small, was something I did for years. I was lucky to work with a local interior designer and consignment shop, making extra income and learning along the way. Several years ago I took adult education classes to become an interior decorator, I’ve always loved creating a gorgeous home. Now it was time to put all of that into practice.
And the Make Lemonade Shop was created.
On May 1st we held a local event “Pillowpalooza” at our home, introducing our line of pillowcases to friends, neighbors and clients. We wanted to see how others would react to our designs before opening an online shop. Between May 1st and May 8th we had sold over 50 pillowcases! Thankfully our ideas for home accents, through pillowcases, were well liked. Over the next few weeks our total sales rose to 75 pillowcases. I’m still working to finish all of those orders, but we’ve also been working to create an online store at the same time.
Here are a few photos showing you the takeover! LOL The Make Lemonade Shop has taken over our home. Kitchen, Dining-room, Living-room. It’s everywhere! Thankfully we have the room for me to branch out. I don’t know how I would get anything done otherwise.
We used to eat dinner in our dining-room. Now, as you can see, this is the epicenter for the shop. I’m using our dining table for painting, sewing, cutting, and anything else that needs done! There’s always a few things happening in here! The kids loved to eat breakfast at the chairs against the blue wall, now they have to fight to get a spot!
As I work on the hand-painted pillowcases they need to hang dry between each paint layer. So I took some twine and painters tape, rigging up a few areas as make-shift clothes lines! And yes, we have a few dirty dishes in the sink, it’s hard to work around the cases in process!
It’s hard to cook on the stove or use the microwave! I did buy some fresh fruit, with the hours I’m working I need the coffee and the nutrition. I hope I get time to cut the fruit before it goes bad! See the coffee cup with the mustache in the cupboard? I’m slightly obsessed!
Don’t look in our messy medicine/junk holder cabinet! ARG! But hey, it works to hang the cases! It makes it easy to go from one to the other. And even if it’s raining outside, the kitchen is full of sunshine! LOL
This is the open doorway from the dining-room to the living-room. Tubs of fabric, some of it anyway, and pillow forms. Anything needed to create the cases. I hand-cut each stencil for the burlap cases and this board comes in really handy!
Our sofa table is full of finished pillowcases awaiting delivery, of course there are mountains of pillow forms waiting to be placed in the cases. This is one side of our living room. Or what used to be our spacious, clean, comfy living-room!
I do take a few minutes to sit in front of the television to cut out the finer details for the cases. Lately I’ve been a bit obsessed with “Scandal”. I had never watched it before. Seriously addicting! I’m up to season 3 and Olivia Pope is my hero!
For someone who loves a neat, clean, well ordered home, this has been a whole new experience. My family is used to having everything in it’s place, now it’s a bit chaotic. But it’s all worth it. We have been able to keep up with the medical expenses and hang on to our home. Win- Win! We are blessed.
